Dry, brittle hair is nothing fun to work with. Apart from looking weak, it often causes breakage which prevents healthy hair growth. While it takes time to repair damage and replenish moisture levels, luckily there are a few DIY hair mask recipes that can help improve your hair’s health over time—no expensive products required.
Everything you need to restore your hair to its best shape can be found in your pantry or refrigerator. Plus, our much-loved DIY hair mask only requires one ingredient, so you don’t have to guess and play home chemist. This is because many popular ingredients used for DIY beauty recipes, such as mayonnaise or aloe vera, are already rich in vitamins, proteins and amino acids.
To learn more about boosting moisture levels in dry hair and the best DIY hair recipes to combat it, we reached out to hairstylist Amy Abramite and certified trichologist Gretchen Fries to find out what really works and what doesn’t. So, keep scrolling to find the 17 best DIY hair masks for dry hair.

“Coconut oil is a natural beauty powerhouse and works well to soften and condition thick, dry hair,” says Abramite. “
There are different ways to use coconut oil depending on your hair needs. For one, you can try pre-shampooing for 10 minutes if you’re using it as a hair strengthening treatment. Or, for a deep conditioning treatment, use in place of conditioner and apply from mid-shaft to ends to soften and detangle. Finally, Abramite notes that “when rubbed directly into the scalp, coconut oil has an antimicrobial effect, which helps fight dandruff. Whatever method you choose, apply a small amount between your hands and comb the coconut using a wide-tooth comb. Dissolve the oil. Coat the head evenly and leave it on. Coconut oil is heavy, so use the right amount for your hair texture. “For fine hair, use a spoonful and for thick hair, use a spoonful,” advises Abramite.
Coconut oil, also known as lauric acid, is derived from coconuts. Lauric acid found in coconut oil may have antimicrobial properties, which can help kill skin bacteria and reduce inflammation. It is also known to remove makeup, exfoliate the skin and prevent moisture.
If you sport fine hair and are looking for a DIY hair mask to treat damage, you’ve found it with a combination of milk and honey. “Honey contains keratin that helps strengthen hair and prevent breakage caused by weak and brittle hair,” explains Abramite. “It also encourages cell regeneration for healthy skin and has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe itching.” Combined with milk – which is full of protein, amino acids, vitamin B12, iron and zinc – the two can support the condition and structure of the hair.

Because milk has a thin, runny consistency, Abramite recommends mixing a cup of milk with a tablespoon of honey in a spray bottle and spritzing it on the hair. Leave on for 10 to 20 minutes after shampooing (in place of conditioner). Rinse with warm water for shiny, smooth results.
The thicker your hair, the higher the milk fat; For example, if you have curly hair, use a cream and if you have thin hair, use a lotion.
Two ingredients you probably have sitting in your kitchen that can do wonders to restore your hair are banana and olive oil. “Bananas hydrate and absorb dull, damaged, and dry hair, as they contain many vitamins and minerals (such as potassium) that can strengthen hair and balance the scalp’s pH,” explains Fries. “Olive oil is rich in healthy fats and vitamin E, which can make hair look shiny and smooth. It can soften hair and heal damage that can lead to breakage and split ends.”
To make a homemade hair mask, use a ripe banana and a tablespoon of oil. Blend or mash the banana until it becomes a puree. Add sunflower oil and continue mixing. The result should be a creamy, foamy hair mask. While showering, use the mask all over your hair and on your scalp and fingers. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing.
Hair Resq Thickening Treatment Shine Boost Shampoo With Biotin
“This split occurs because the structure of the cuticle is weakened, which results in damaged hair,” says Abramite. Damage is mostly caused by harsh chemicals from heat styling, highlights or extensions, and free radicals in our environment like pollution and the sun. “And while nothing can fix split ends back together (you’ll need a cut to get rid of them completely), a hair mask can keep them healthy for now.
“Avocado contains minerals that will seal the cuticle, as well as proteins and vitamins that will nourish and soften the hair,” says Abramite. “A layer of olive oil will add extra shine and softness to damaged hair.” To do this, use half an avocado and half a cup of oil. Mix together in a bowl with a fork and apply only to split ends. It is better to leave it for half an hour.
There’s more to your Sunday breakfast. “Egg yolks contain many vitamins that can make hair more resistant to damage,” Fries explains. “Vitamins A and E, biotin, and folate are some of the nutrients associated with hair growth and healthy hair—applying egg yolk to your scalp can coat your hair roots with these vitamins.”
To make this mask, start with clean, dry hair. Stir the egg yolk and apply the mask with your fingers, covering the top of the head and the ends of the hair. Leave it for an hour and wash it off

Both experts agree that yogurt formulations can help prevent wrinkling. “The lactic acid in yogurt activates the hair, which will help prevent damage and prevent frizz,” says Fries. “Yogurt when washed off also helps remove dead skin cells that can cause pores.” Yogurt can be mixed with many other ingredients depending on the desired result. (Mix with coconut oil to help with hair loss, honey to help retain moisture, avocado to strengthen hair and add shine, or lemon to balance the scalp’s pH.)
Abramite suggests mixing a tablespoon of olive oil with a cup of yogurt to add extra shine and softness to strands. Leave the mixture on the hair for 10 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water.
While aloe vera is best known for its cooling effects that help soothe sunburns, its healing properties can also benefit the hair and scalp. Aloe vera is rich in vitamins E and C, both antioxidants that act as shields against free radicals, making it a great source of strength and fiber. Plus, it has incredible water repellency that helps attract and retain moisture—goodbye dry hair! As if that wasn’t enough, it also has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe an irritated scalp. For best results, mix fresh aloe vera with water and spray on hair as a pick-me-up or use a large spoonful of aloe vera and mix it into your favorite conditioner or hair mask on wash day.
According to Freeze, apple cider vinegar can be beneficial for many hair types. “It can be a great barrier to long, beautiful hair. It can help close the cuticles of colored hair, thus reducing fade. This makes it a popular treatment among people with curly and natural hair. Even a heavy wash removes dirt and Helps reduce hair loss.” Be careful if you have dry hair, as using too much can strip excess oil and cause dryness.

For a light mask, mix a cup of apple cider vinegar with a teaspoon of honey (this is used as a binding agent to lock in moisture on the hair and scalp). Put the mixture in a spray bottle and mist the hair. Leave the turmeric for 10 minutes before washing it off with warm water.
A good guideline for an apple cider vinegar rinse is one and a half to four tablespoons
