Baby, it’s cold outside. My humidifier is blowing, but it’s impossible to avoid dry air in the winter, my skin feels it. I have been known to have scratchy, uncomfortable marks on my legs and back. So I looked for a moisturizer that really helped.

Lotions For Dry Skin: What Works Best?

“This time of year, it’s really important to moisturize well,” says Victoria L. Hatfield, a board-certified dermatologist in Washington, DC. “Cold weather and more time indoors means soap and hand sanitizers are constantly drying our skin, so we need to repair our skin’s moisture and keep it moisturized.” Moisture to the rescue!

Best Body Lotions For Softer Skin

From body butters to drugstore lotions, I tried 16 skin care products, finding the best products to soothe and strengthen my dry winter skin. My method was simple: Shower, and spray the cream on the newly dry skin. I wanted to see how they smelled, felt, and how they were throughout the day. What happened to my skin minutes later, and hours later? Now these amazing, hydrating results (top eight) will soothe my skin (and, maybe, yours) all winter long.

This is officially my favorite! My mom has been using this since her dermatologist recommended it for her dry skin years ago, and she passed it on as a great recommendation. Hatfield is also a fan. It has a thick, smooth texture and feels very light when it hits my hands after showering. It is formulated with both ceramides and hyaluronic acid, making it very effective at locking in moisture throughout the day. Although it will be less, say, in the summer. It’s not noisy, it’s fragrance-free, and it’s effective when you need to improve the appearance of dry skin.

Hatfield uses Vanicream for himself and his family, including his two young children. “It’s fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and full of hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help repair and restore skin’s elasticity,” she explains. “It’s safe for kids, safe to use for allergies, and safe to use from head to toe.”

I picked it up because it smelled so good, bright and sweet. Formulated with Vitamin E, shea butter, and hydrating botanical oils, it burns but still soothes my skin. I loved the lingering citrus scent. This is skin that is very dry, but could still use a lift.

Body Lotion Best Sellers Trio

When my skin was troubled, with strange lines a few years ago, this was the dermatologist I chose, and it has been in my bathroom ever since. Enriched with prebiotic oat that is clinically proven to soothe stressed, blemish-prone, and dry skin, this is another lightweight option that still provides moisture. It is fragrance free and feels gentle.

Rosehip seed oil, almond oil, and Vitamin E are part of the winning formula. It has a slightly heavy floral scent that I have to be in a good mood to wear – like walking through the perfume section of a supermarket. A light, subtle glow belies its intense moist oomph; it leaves my skin as soft as can be. Although the scent is a bit heavy for my taste, I love the way it feels, and the way it feels on my skin.

I add the CeraVe emergency makeup repair cream to the go-tos range when the dryness gets worse. This thick cream, specially formulated for dry, irritated and eczema-prone skin, offers a soothing formula. I now hand apply this to my elbows and my bad heels. Unscented and made from pure ingredients, this is a lifeline for dry skin.

This drugstore moisturizer is infused with shea butter and claims to leave skin feeling happy and comfortable for 48 hours. The consistency is between runny and super rich, but it had some stickiness that I didn’t like on first application. Yet the next day, as promised, my skin felt great.

You probably already use a face moisturizer, but if you don’t use body oil regularly, you should make sure the rest of your skin stays healthy and hydrated. And we have good news: There’s no need to shell out a lot of money or make an extra trip to the specialty store because, according to dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf, “pharmacy and comfort sprays use humectants [moisturizers and aging agents) and emollients [substances that keep your skin from drying out] to soften and hydrate the skin.”

We’ve spent 323 hours researching 17 top-selling over-the-counter creams to help you find the best over-the-counter cream for your skin type and needs. During the trial period, we evaluated the lotion’s staying power, ease of use, absorption, and effectiveness. After carefully considering these results, and checking with dermatologists for their recommendations, we’ve arrived at these top picks that will give you the baby soft skin you’ve been longing for.

Key Ingredients: Ceramide, Hyaluronic Acid, Dimethicone, Petrolatum | Skin Type: All, including sensitive | Size: 8, 12, 16 fl oz | SPF: None | Cruelty Free: No

Best Body Lotions For Aging Skin, Tested & Reviewed 2024

Of all the drugstore creams we tried, this one came out the best for all the reasons. Look no further than Cerave’s moisturizing cream lotion that delivers buttery quality moisture with a fast-absorbing formula. We like that, although it has a heavy balance, it is easy to use and it works well. We were also impressed with how quickly it went up—within a minute of use, we could drag it on our legs without any problems.

This cream left the skin feeling and looking amazing (thanks to the ceramides and hyaluronic acid in the milk). We noticed a watery glow throughout the day after application. The only thing we would like to see changed is the packaging from the tube to the pump bottle to make dispensing the product easier.

Key ingredients: cocoa butter | Skin Type: Dry Skin, Sensitive Skin | Size: 10, 20.3, 32 fl oz | SPF: None | Cruelty Free: No

A tried and true brand, Vaseline’s Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Lotion is the perfect medicated lotion for anyone—but especially the shopper looking to get the most bang for their buck. It comes in three sizes and we know that a little goes a long way; even with daily use, a small container will last a while. We also love that it comes packaged in a stainless motor bottle. In addition, the soft cocoa butter milk will repel the heat.

Lipikar Ap+m Triple Repair Body Cream For Dry Skin

We were very impressed with the consistency of the cream – it spreads well on the skin and absorbs quickly without leaving any residue. Most importantly, it leaves dry skin feeling healthy, nourished and hydrated. That said, I didn’t see a huge improvement in the skin’s appearance after daily use.

Key Ingredients: Cocoa Butter, Colloidal Oatmeal, Aloe | Skin Type: All Skin Types | Size: 8 fl oz | SPF: None | Cruelty Free: Yes

Moisturizing Oil leaves skin moisturized and soothed even on the driest days when skin feels cracked. We love the consistency of the thickness, and that, unlike most lotions, it doesn’t take much effort to rub this formula into the skin. The quick absorption also stood out to us, as well as how effective the lotion is, maybe thanks to the colloidal oatmeal – you’ll be surprised how much moisture you can get just from a fire!

Despite its thick consistency, the cream does not leave any residue (two, do not rub with a cloth) and is gentle enough to be used on all skin types. However, even though our skin felt great throughout the day after using this cream, we were a little disappointed to find that out.
